Jay P. Sheryll, Esq.
Attorney and Owner of Sheryll Law
As a husband and father of two daughters, Jay Sheryll understands the importance of family relationships and legacy. When he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Juris Doctor degree from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, he knew he wanted to start his own practice and devote it to estate planning because, in his words, “having a family is all we leave behind.” He established Sheryll Law, P.C. in Riverhead, New York, in 2017, where he and his staff cater to clients’ estate planning needs on the East End of Long Island.
Jay and his team help their clients leave a legacy and achieve the peace of mind of knowing that they can protect their family if something happens to them. Sheryll Law, P.C. understands that their clients have worked hard to build their legacy. It is their pleasure to help them leave their money to their loved ones according to their wishes. Having observed other firms haphazardly draft wills and throw together some powers-of-attorney without any thought to the planning aspect, Jay realized he could fulfill a need for East End Long Island clients.
Furthermore, because Sheryll Law, P.C. devotes its practice solely to estate planning, they know the rules of the game and explain them to everyone who consults with them. Notes Jay, “Our clients have a right to be educated so that we can help them make smart decisions and accomplish their objectives.”
Thanks to Jay’s decision to focus only on estate planning, Sheryll Law, P.C. is also an excellent resource for clients - not just in other law areas where they can connect them with like-minded professionals - but in most aspects of their lives. It’s the mission of Jay and Sheryll Law, P.C. to be the last attorney and law firm their clients shop for because they go beyond estate planning services to become a trusted advisor in a multitude of vital areas.
What makes Jay so passionate about estate planning law? “I enjoy seeing the ease and peace of mind our clients experience after we’ve helped them navigate through the process - especially because they often wait until the last minute. We guide them through a trying time in their lives and help them achieve their goals. That is what drives all of us at Sheryll Law, P.C.”
Although Jay and the Sheryll Law, P.C. team are consummate professionals with years of estate planning experience, they remain approachable and down-to-earth. In an area of law perceived to be stuffy and condescending, under Jay’s guidance, Sheryll Law, P.C. treats their clients with respect, courtesy, and warmth --as evidenced by their many online reviews.
When not working, Jay enjoys spending time with his wife Brigitte, and daughters Eliana and Lily; playing chess; and making music with various instruments, including the guitar, trumpet, and violin. He and his family reside on the East End of Long Island, within 15 minutes of the Sheryll Law, P.C. Riverhead office.

Jennifer Raguso, Associate Attorney at Sheryll Law, P.C., is Jay's right-hand person for Medicaid and estate planning. Raguso has worked in this area of law since 2011, having practiced at a prominent elder law firm and interning with Jay at another elder law firm. Within the elder law umbrella, Raguso’s specialty is asset protection, including Medicaid planning and assisting families with setting up home care and deciding whether nursing home care or home care is the best option for their loved ones.
Raguso looks forward to assisting Sheryll Law P.C. 's clients in these areas of law, in addition to general estate planning, tax planning, and avoiding probate for younger families. She’ll also assist with probate trust administration for the loved ones of clients that pass away.
What does she enjoy most about her job? “What's nice about this type of law is that I get to see the people I'm helping; there's human interaction,” Raguso explains. “It’s not as adversarial. I’m just advocating for my clients, not necessarily fighting with another attorney. Before COVID, most of my meetings with clients ended with hugs because you learn so much about their families and make a genuine connection. Growing up, my sickly grandmother lived with us, and my mom was her fierce advocate. That inspired me to pursue a career in elder law and estate planning. I’ve always had a special place for the senior population.”
Raguso, a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Binghamton University who received her Juris Doctor from Touro Law School, is an active member of the Elder Law and Estate Planning Section of the Suffolk County Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association’s Elder Law Committee and Trusts and Estates Committee
While attending Law School, she was a member of the Moot Court Honors Board of Advocates, where she served as Competition Editor. Raguso received the Susan Dietrich Clyne Public Interest Legal Fellowship for her work with the Senior Citizens Law Program and CALI Awards for Academic Excellence in Elder Law and her work in the Elder Law Clinic. She is admitted to the practice of law in New York State.
Before the birth of her son, now a year-and-a-half, Raguso spent much of her free time hiking, practicing yoga, and enjoying a variety of outdoor activities. These days, sleep is her primary goal when not working - along with spending quality time with more family and friends now that COVID restrictions are loosening up.
Sheryll Law, P.C. Paralegal Kasey Cosgrove has worked in law firms since high school. She has extensive client contact, meeting with estate planning clients to design their estate plans. She also manages all aspects of legal production; probate and estate administration; real estate (although not the firm’s primary area of law); Article 81 Guardianship proceedings; and business formations. Additionally, she is learning the Medicaid ropes to assist clients in that area.
So, what does Kasey enjoy most about working at Sheryll Law, P.C.?
“Number one, we’re actually helping people,” she explains. “It’s just a different type of help in the specific area of estate planning. Our clients are appreciative and nice to work with. That is my favorite part of working in this area of law. Prior to COVID-19, we could go into nursing homes to help clients put their affairs in order. Either way, it’s a wonderful feeling, knowing we have helped clients uphold their final wishes. We often see people right at the end of their lives, and hear about their passing after we’ve gotten their estate plan together. It feels good to help them in that way, and to assist their families through the process of marshalling assets and settling their affairs because that is an extremely stressful time. They’re grieving and they must deal with all of this stuff. It can be intimidating and overwhelming. It’s rewarding to help the family through that process.”
Kasey earned her B.S. in Business Administration from Long Island University Southampton Campus (2003), her Paralegal Certificate from Stony Brook University (2007), and completed a New York State Real Estate Salesperson Course at Suffolk County Community College-Riverhead Campus (2007). She also completed continuing education courses: Adverse Possession & Boundary Line Disputes (2007) and 2006 Policies & 1031 Updates (2007). For continuing education, Kasey attended the Elder Law Immersion Camp for Non-Attorneys.
When she’s not working, Kasey enjoys spending time with her nine-year-old daughter, reading, going to the beach, fishing, and kayaking. She’s an active member in her church, where she serves on the feeding ministry.
Brad Sheryll, younger brother of Sheryll Law, P.C. Founder Jay Sheryll, Esq., joined the firm as a paralegal in 2017. Following his graduation from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor’s Degree in History, Brad enrolled in the four-year night program at Touro Law Center. He graduated last year with his Juris Doctor Degree and is currently waiting to be admitted to the Bar.
During his time at Stony Brook, Brad did a nighttime shift at another law firm to gain experience. Upon graduation, he became a legal assistant and remained with that law firm for three-and-a-half years. When his brother Jay established Sheryll Law, P.C., Brad accepted the opportunity to help his brother grow his Long Island Estate and Trust Planning Firm as a paralegal.
His favorite part of the job? “The interaction with the clients and being able to help them with their estate planning goals is my favorite part of my job at Sheryll Law, P.C.,” Brad says. “In our niche, we can create close connections with our clients and, for the most part, it’s a happy situation. There are some sad situations we deal with, but again, it’s gratifying to help our clients through those difficult times.”
In his paralegal role, Brad also handles Sheryll Law P.C.’s Medicaid cases, which involves a significant client interaction and collecting documentation and necessary information for the Medicaid applications.
When not working diligently on behalf of Sheryll Law P.C.’s clients, Brad spends most of his time in the great outdoors golfing, fishing, boating, going to the beach, and enjoying all the outdoor activities Long Island has to offer.
Client Support Manager
Client Support Manager Courtney Benediktsson joined Sheryll Law, P.C. in July 2020, after receiving her MBA at Quinnipiac University through the accelerated 4 + 1 program and her undergraduate degree in Marketing with a minor in Law and Society in 2019 from Quinnipiac University.
Although Courtney accrued valuable experience as an intern for Live Nation Entertainment, followed by over two years as an intern and customer service representative for Sea Tow Services, International, her role at Sheryll Law, P.C. provided her first exposure to estate planning. For Courtney, a typical day at the office involves managing the engagement process with clients from the moment they contact Sheryll Law, P.C. to ensure their complete satisfaction throughout the process once they retain the firm’s estate planning services. She also generates ideas for relevant and educational content for social media, emails, and webinars, manages local outreach efforts and strategizes with Jay and the team to develop and implement effective plans to assist even more clients in 2021 and beyond.
“I like learning about estate planning law because, as a young person who didn’t know anything about it and thought it did not concern me, it’s preparing me for important things I must be aware of moving forward. Helping our clients with their estate planning goals also helps me in my personal life. Since I had a minor in law, my work at Sheryll Law, P.C. provides real-world experience about how everything works. And I enjoy assisting clients in their efforts to protect their legacy and their families’ best interests.”
In her free time, Courtney enjoys listening to country music, going to concerts, keeping up with the latest trends in pop culture, fashion, and entertainment, dining at new restaurants, and visiting the North Fork on the weekends. A lover of travel, she plans to visit Switzerland and Norway in the not-too-distant future.
Receptionist Maria Flores became part of the Sheryll Law, P.C. team in 2020. Her typical day includes various tasks from cleaning and disinfecting the office in alignment with COVID protocols to filing documents, following up on emails and voicemails, preparing cover letters for documents, helping with the mail, copying and scanning, and taking client phone calls.
While Maria enjoys all aspects of her job, meeting with Sheryll Law’s warm, friendly clients is her favorite task because they always have interesting stories to share. “I’m very intuitive, and I connect with the clients who come to us,” Maria explains. “I have a special affinity for older people, particularly those who have lost a spouse and may feel a bit lonely. When I speak with them, I can tell they’re happy to engage in conversation. In general, I love to talk to our clients, get a sense of who they are, and make them feel comfortable.”
Before COVID, the eco-conscious animal lover spent her free time volunteering at the Bideawee Animal Shelter and a nursing home in the Islip area. Maria and her friends would talk to residents and perform needed tasks like gardening.
